DeMatha Soccer: Making A Play For First Place Edition

“Goals change games…” –DeMatha Head Coach Dafydd Evans

The Stags are in first place in the WCAC after they finished off the first round of play with wins against Paul VI and Archbishop Carroll.  The Stags will play each school again before the playoffs begin but right now DeMatha is 8 – 0 in conference competition and 9 – 1, overall.  After their only loss to a nationally ranked high school on the road in New Mexico, the soccer team all but fell out of national competition plummeting to a ranking of #49 in a respected poll.

DeMatha still maintained the number one ranking in the Washington Post, as the area’s best soccer team and has zeroed in on the target of a WCAC title.  A championship could make quite a statement: that this DeMatha team is still probably one of the best in the country no matter what polls come out.  (They are currently sitting at #34 in the country.) One thing that I want to add about this year’s soccer team is that Cody Albrecht is the sort of star player that you want on your soccer team.  In the win over Archbishop Carroll he had an activity hat trick: two assists and one goal. The Stags only scored three goals in the game and Albrecht was in on all three of them.

The kid has skills and gets everybody involved, but I can totally understand why the coach from Archbishop Carroll spent time recalling the beauty of the Lions’ only goal and waxed romantically on the higher quality of his players in an interview.  He was right about one thing, though: The Stags do have numbers.  Eleven goals in the last three games when you go back to that win over Bishop O’Connell.  Even Cody isn’t putting up numbers like that all by himself so there are a lot of game changers on DeMatha’s roster.

I’m betting that Coach Evans has a herd of Stags.

I bet we get a chance to see them all play.
